This
moderate tour takes us
along the river Arno west out of Florence to a
beautiful
wooded area known as the Barco Reale, former hunting grounds of the
Grand Dukes of Tuscany.
It is located in the
Montalbano, a mountain
range which divides the huge plain in which Florence is situated.
During the first part of the ride, we'll meander on trails along the river,
then begin a short, moderately steep climb through olive groves and vineyards

to the town of
Artimino.
Artimino is famous for its villa, built by the architect
Buontalenti
in the late 16th century for the
Medici, the
famous family who ruled Florence for three centuries.
we'll stop to enjoy the vistas,
archeological museum,
and
Romanesque church of San Leonardo, built
in part from the remains of the Etruscan settlement, dating from the 6th
c. A.C.E.
we'll have lunch either at a
local trattoria
in Artimino, or, for a slightly longer tour, continue riding to a restaurant
nestled in the woods further up the mountain.
The afternoon's ride will include some
fun trail riding
through the woods of the Barco Reale as well as more meandering along the
river on our way back to Florence.
For groups looking for more mileage, we also offer an optional extension
across the river to another beautiful wooded area, a
paradise
for mountain bikers, with its abundance of single tracks crisscrossing
the hills.
we'll pass some lovely villas and the beautifully situated church of
San
Martino alla Palma overlooking the valley, before we head back down
to Florence.
