It was near the village of Vinci, in a landscape of olive
trees and vines not far from the Monte Albano that the
genius
Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452. On this tour, we'll cycle through
the landscape that so inspired him. In order to allow everyone to enjoy
this beautiful region, we offer a tour with two options:
easy
and
moderately challenging.
we'll begin near the
banks of the Arno, in
the town of Limite, and immediately start climbing out of the valley. We'll
wind our way through
silvery olive groves and
around the terraced plots that so characterize this area. Enjoying the short
ascents and descents, we'll soon arrive at the
famous
Leccio, a huge 300-year-old oak tree that has one of the finest views
in the area. We can enjoy a rest under its shade and look

out
at the Arno valley and the hills of Pisa beyond.
Our next stop is the
birthplace of Leonardo,
a simple house surrounded by olive groves and vines that contains a small
museum. From there, It's a quick descent to the charming medieval village
of Vinci. Among other things, it has a wonderful museum,
museo
Vinciano, inside an 11th century castle of the Counts Guidi, containing
a collection of about
100 models of machinery
built to the artist's plans and designs.
we'll also enjoy lunch at a local trattoria, enjoying
plates
of pasta and the wonderful
extra virgin olive
oil. The afternoon's ride is much easier than the morning. Leaving
Vinci, we'll head downhill to follow a trail with some short ups and downs,
passing some lovely villas and farmhouses. We can take our time getting
back to Limite, enjoying this
gentle wide-open landscape.
