DAY TWO
The morning begins with a
full breakfast buffet,
none of this continental breakfast for us cyclists!
Today we move north-east, towards the highest mountain in the Chianti,
Monte
San Michele. To reach 892 meters (2765 feet), we have our work cut
out for us. Fortunately,

there are plenty of sites and stops along the way and we can take our time.
Also, there is always the option to avoid the last long climb by riding
in our
support van.
Leaving our villa, we'll follow a ridge line for several kilometers, with
lovely views to the north and south.
As we gradually climb towards
Castellina in Chianti,
we'll pass through the tiny village of
Fonterutoli,
home to an excellent Chianti Classico. From here, we can choose to continue
towards Castellina and visit the town that during the Middle Ages was capital
of the
Chianti League, a military alliance
against Siena that corresponds with today's Chianti Classico wine region,
or we can follow a wide, unpaved trail to
Radda in
Chianti. Radda is another renowned Chianti town and was also part
of the Chianti League.
we'll lunch here at a local trattoria and rest up for the final climb to
Monte San Michele (or opt for a van shuttle to the hotel).
Leaving Radda, we'll enter the
quiet, shaded woods,
passing nearby the famous
Albola winery.
we'll pass through the tiny town of Badiaccia a Montemuro and then make
the final push to reach Villa San Michele. Our efforts will be well rewarded
by the views and
incredible stillness and quiet that
we'll find.
Here we are far from civilization, although there is always a bottle of
Chianti nearby.
Dinner tonight will be at the villa's lovely restaurant.
