This
challenging tour is in a particularly
scenic part of the
Chianti, just north of Siena.
It is a real mountain biker's tour with some technically challenging sections
and a variety of terrain:
trails through the woods
and quiet unpaved roads through vineyards and the charming tiny villages
that dot the countryside. The tour begins with a van transfer to the town
of Monteriggioni, which you'll have time to explore after the ride.
In the morning,

we'll
ride up and down the hills of the Sienese Chianti and at mid-day stop for
lunch at an agriturismo on a wooded hillside with
views
of Siena.
After a delicious lunch, we'll hop back on our bikes to ride part of the
via Francigena, a medieval trade and pilgrimage
route that runs from northern Europe to Rome.
we'll be the modern-day pilgrims seeking the beauty and serenity of this
land, passing by a
fortified medieval monestary, Abbadia
Isola, at one time an island-"isola"-in the middle of the
swamplands that once covered the area.
The ride ends with a short climb to
Monteriggioni,
a fortified medieval town perched on a hill.
The Sienese founded the town at the northwest border of the Sienese state
as part of its defensive structure against Florence, with whom Siena was
at war throughout the Middle Ages. Monteriggioni"s beautifully preserved
fortifications--encircling wall and 14 towers--make it one of the best examples
of a
"terra murata" in Tuscany.
Inside the city gates, the
large piazza offers
a pleasant spot to sit and savor a cappuccino and the adventures of the
day.
