On this
3-day moderate tour
we'll follow the Arno river out of Florence west towards the
Montalbano,
a mountain

range
which divides the huge plain in which Florence is situated. This tour offers
a nice
variety of terrain, from flat riding
along the river, to
climbing and descending
through the
olive groves and vineyards that
extend along the hillsides of the Arno river valley, to
fun
trail riding through the woods of the Montalbano.
Our home for two nights is
the Montalbano, a lovely
inn and restaurant nestled in the woods, known for its excellent
Tuscan cooking.
The area is
rich with cultural offerings, including
the Medici villa at Artimino, the town of
Vinci, the
birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, and beautiful Romanesque churches.
Day 1 Highlights : Easy, flat riding along
the Arno followed by a tough but short climb through the lush hills to
Artimino,
home of the
16th-century Medici "Villa of 100 chimneys".
Lunch at a local trattoria. An afternoon ride through the
Barco
Reale, the former hunting grounds of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and
a beautiful wooded area, to our hotel.
