This
moderate tour begins
in one of the more important towns of the Chianti, Greve, famous for its
wine production and
charming,
medieval piazza, both of which we'll have time to savor at the end
of the ride.
we start out with a gentle climb through the surrounding hills, passing
beautiful villas and vineyards, on our way to the incomparable
Castello
di Verrazzano, the huge castle/villa of the Verrazzano family, famous
for their prolific and nearly
thousand-year tradition
of wine production
(and their son, Giovanni, an important navigator and explorer of the Americas
for whom a bridge is named in Manhattan). Looking out from the villa, you'll
find yourself surrounded by a
sea of vineyards.
we will then continue climbing on a quiet trail through the woods until
we reach the top of the ridge, from which we'll rapidly descend to our lunch
destination,
Badia a Passignano, site of a
beautiful
medieval monestary still inhabited
by Benedictine monks.
After lunch, we'll climb back up to the ridge, enjoying the views along
the way, then follow a lovely trail down to the
fortified
medieval village of Montefioralle. Dramatically perched on a hill
above Greve, it is one of the oldest settlements of the Chianti and we'll
enjoy wandering through its narrow, winding streets. Continuing our descent,
we'll arrive back in the piazza in Greve and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment.
How "bout a nice
glass of chianti?
