This
moderately challenging
tour, one of two tours that begins in Greve in Chianti, takes us to the
highest point in the Chianti, Monte San Michele
(2600 ft). The tour is not technically difficult but, because of the amount
of climbing, it is physically demanding.
we'll start riding through the valley of the Greve river and soon leave
the paved road, heading up to the town of
Panzano
with its impressive
church and belltower, both
dating from the period in which it was an important and well-populated fortified
town. From Panzano, we'll continue climbing, enjoying the ever-changing
scenery: first
vineyards and rows of
cypresses,
then woods of
oak, chestnut and pine.

The
rewards will not be lacking when we arrive at the
summit:
the satisfaction of our accomplishment, the breathtaking,
panoramic
views and the delicious lunch served at the Villa San Michele, with
its
typical Tuscan cuisine and excellent wine
list. Monte San Michele is part of a huge natural park and site of a 14th-century
church dedicated to Saint Michael.
"What goes up, must come down," which we'll
happily do, heading down the north side of the mountain. Not only will we
enjoy the descent, but also some fun side trails leading to jewels such
as
Convertoie, once an important Etruscan-Roman
settlement, and the villa of
Uzzano, considered
one of the most beautiful villas of the Chianti.
Our return to Greve will be quick and here we'll have time to relax in its
characterisic piazza with a glass of its characteristic
wine.
